New Seagoing Bursary for Students and Early Career Scientists

In future years, the plan is for students to join sea going expeditions on RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery, however due to COVID restrictions this year’s bursary will be for 5 students to take part in a virtual bursary.

This will consist of 2 exclusive NOC workshops in May 2021 followed by a 6-month mentor opportunity with a NOC scientist specialising the students area of interest. The workshops will include a 3D tour of RSS Discovery and an opportunity to engage with a range of NOC scientists. Successful students will hear about NOC scientists experiences, careers and research and have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. Successful candidates will then be matched with a scientist specialising in their area of interest and will have 6, one hour monthly calls in 2021. All recipients of the virtual bursary will receive a completion certificate and priority access to our 2022 sea-going bursary application process.

It is essential that the Bursary applicants are registered as students, or employed as researchers for the period of the Bursary, and that permission for the visit is given by supervisors or line managers (as appropriate). To be eligible for a West P&I Bursary as a student, you must be in postgraduate education (Masters level or PhD).
