The Government Office for Science is launching a pilot for a new Leadership Development Scheme for mid-career scientists and engineers who want to turn their expertise into real-world impact. This 12-month, part-time scheme is for those driven to tackle national and global challenges, grow as leaders and shape the policies that affect millions of lives. It requires a commitment of one day per month, primarily delivered online but with opportunities for in-person events throughout the year.
Applications are open until 9th February. Sessions are expected to start in Spring 2026.
Participants will gain valuable insight into how government works and how science and engineering directly influence decision-making at the highest levels. Through exposure to senior civil servants, tailored coaching and mentoring and hands-on learning, the scheme will enable participants to build the leadership skills, confidence, and influence needed to operate effectively in complex policy environments. It will also build awareness of civil service functions and senior responsibilities, clarify career pathways for working in a policy environment and help participants reflect on and develop their leadership skills.
Delivered by GO-Science in partnership with senior leaders, policy experts and professional leadership trainers, the scheme offers a mixture of structured learning with networking opportunities across the public sector, industry and academia. As a pilot scheme, participants can play an active role in shaping this scheme and our future support for science and engineering leadership.
