The Challenger Society for Marine Science

We are the foremost learned society representing the UK academic marine research community.

The following Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are offering funding to support up to two student members per SIG (eight students in total) to attend the upcoming Challenger Society Conference in Bangor (September 7-11, 2026).

  • AMBIO
  • Deep-Sea Ecosystems
  • Coastal and Shelf Seas
  • Ocean Modelling

Successful applicants will have their conference registration fee reimbursed (up to £190, equivalent to the student member registration rate), provided they also attend the associated SIG meeting during the conference.

To apply, please submit no more than 200 words explaining how attending the conference and SIG meeting will benefit your PhD research, career development, or professional interests.

Applications should be sent to Peter Sheehan (P.Sheehan@uea.ac.uk) by 21 July 2026.

Please note that successful applicants will need to pay the conference registration fee up front and then reclaim the cost from the Society following the conference, in accordance with the reimbursement process.
